about mix of flavours

Welcome to my food blog, Mix of Flavours, where I plan to share flavorful food finds from my kitchen to yours.  I am a self-proclaimed foodie and passionate home cook who wants to share all of the delicious and craveworthy food I create in easy-to-follow recipes with YOU!

I believe the kitchen is the heart of the home and what we put in our bodies is so very important. A common overlooked factor in good cooking is, simply, good fresh ingredients. You don’t have to cook fancy or complicated meals, sometimes a flexible no-fuss approach, cooked with love meal turns out the best!

Some of these recipes focus on whole foods that will fuel your body optimally, some will be crave-worthy classics, and others will be yummy scrumptious recipes that are just good for the soul because we all deserve to indulge every now and then. I hope this blog motivates you to try new foods and discover new flavors. I encourage you to adapt the recipes to your liking, be flexible and do what feels right for you, find your flow in the kitchen and go with it.

“This is my invariable advice to people: Learn how to cook—try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless and above all have fun.”

a mothers love

This blog is dedicated to my mother Lynn, or as we now call her since becoming a grandmother years ago, Lulu. I owe my passion for cooking and lifelong love of food to her. I learned much more than just the art of cooking from her, like the basics or how to pull a complete meal together. Instead through years of fond memories in the kitchen I learned that food has the power to bring people together, nourish your mind, body, and soul, and that the kitchen is the heart of the home.

Her biscotti making was her greatest pleasure in the kitchen and a true art form. She made intricate biscotti such as a cranberry white chocolate chip with a white chocolate glaze or my favorite chocolate dipped almond biscotti, making the most wonderful sweet smells fill our home while growing up. She was blessed in the baking department, me not so much!  She would make dozens of batches of biscotti to hand out at the holidays, or have on reserve in the freezer whenever friends or family would drop in last minute to visit.

That is Lulu, her door is always open where all are welcome and warm comforting food is ready to be enjoyed together around the table. She taught me food is best served with good company and meals should end with good conversation, and maybe some chocolate. Cooking is meant to be flexible; mistakes happen, go with the flow and cook with love.

food travels and memories

lulu and kaitlyn

Food can evoke memory and emotion. My favorite food memories are with her and my brother Dylan when we went on a whirlwind trip through Europe.  Lugging our small suitcases from hostel to hostel, sleeping some nights on the Eurail train, or at homes of old friends. Our goal was to travel our way through as much as we could see in 12 days and eat all the local cuisine until our bellies were full.

We enjoyed wine and scartossi in Venice. Lampredotto and gelato in Florence. Tried something new in Cinque Terre, sardine pizza-salty but surprisingly good!  Picnicked with the most flavorful farmers market strawberries, cherries, goat cheese, and a baguette in Nice, France while looking out at the Mediterranean Sea. Dined on all the schnitzel in Austria and fell in love with kartoffelsalat. Ate street food such as doner kabobs in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Had a prost with das bier in Munich at the Hofbrauhaus and munched on classic Bavarian fare such as pretzels. And ended the trip in Paris, enjoying croissants, escargot, lots of red wine, and home-made meals from friends. The trip was full of memories, mostly centered around the food we ate and the company we shared it with, all while enjoying the local cuisine to the geographical area we were in.

my vision

What I want from this blog, Mix of Flavours, is to bring people together through the power of food. To embrace each other’s cultural diversities and learn from one another. To share our love of food and connect over all the wonderful mix of flavors there are. I can’t wait for you to try the recipes I share and hopefully find some new favorites that you can make over and over again, and most importantly create fun memories in the kitchen!

many thanks

I must give a huge shout out to my mom for inspiring me in all my endeavors in the kitchen. My close friends who gave me the courage to start this food blog and being my hype women along the way.  My sweet little ones Brielle and Cooper who are forever my taste testers and fellow culinary creators while Mama’s in the kitchen cooking, and most of all my husband Brad who has been with me every step of the way supporting me and helping make all of this possible.
